Overview – AA Coupling Shaft Parts Group (AA-4802 – AA-4827)
Production Assemblies – There were three production coupling shaft and housing assemblies. They were installed between the transmission and the integral u-joint housing section (i.e. the bell section) at the front of the torque tube.
All three assemblies were installed through the rear side of the #3 frame cross member. Consequently, removal required the rear of the AA frame to be blocked up and the rear axle to be disconnected allowing it to be move back enough so that the drive shaft pulled out of the u-joint connected to the rear of the coupling shaft. Once this was accomplished, the coupling shaft assembly could be disconnected and removed.
The production coupling shaft assemblies were:
AA-4802 – Production assembly used for AA131‘s with the A-chassis 3-speed transmission – used from the beginning of production until the introduction of the 4-speed transmission in September 1929.
AA-4802-B/C – Production assemblies used for AA131/AA157 with the 4-speed transmission.
Repair Assemblies – These assemblies were provided through Ford-Service starting in 1932 as repair coupling shaft assemblies for AA’s with a 4-speed transmission.
When working on AA’s with a 4-speed transmission, restorers need to know if their AA has a repair coupling shaft assembly since all parts are unique and installation/removal differs from original. The repair assemblies were designed to be removed from the AA without disturbing the rear axle.
AA-4802-D/E – Repair assemblies used for AA131/AA157 with the 4-speed transmission.
Finish – The coupling shaft housing, front support, and rear support were painted gloss black. The A-chassis transmission main shaft bearing retainer was painted Ford Engine Green. The u-joint outer housing caps were painted semi-gloss black. Fastener finishes are defined in each of the parts tables.
Note – Multiple Ford part group parts were used for the installation of the coupling shaft assembly. This included the retainers for the transmission main shaft rear bearing, u-joints and u-joint housing caps.
