Body-in-White

The build-up of a body ready for paint is known as the “body-in-white”. All of the parts making up the “body-in-white” were painted body color as follows:

82-A Closed Cab Body-in-White

  • Body panels, sills, floor pan, seat riser assembly with wood cross brace, pillars, braces, dispatch boxes, doors, roof frame assembly (top wood)
  • Cowl assembly with a single strip of welting installed over the gas tank and between the cowl panels and hinge pillars
  • Door lock assemblies (i.e. latches) – with nickel plated, interior door lock operator masked off
  • Door lock striker assemblies and female dove tails installed on lock pillar

82-B Closed Cab Body-in-White

  • Body panels, sills, floor pan, seat riser assembly with wood cross brace, pillars, braces, doors, roof frame assembly (top wood)

Open Cargo Body-in-White

  • ?????????????????????

Paint Colors

82-A Closed Cab

  • Body-in-white – body color, not polished *1
  • Windshield hinge (female) – body color (hung with cab) *2
  • Windshield assembly – body color (hung with cab) *2
  • Hinge Pillar finish strips – body color (hung with cab) *2
  • Front belt rail finish strip – body color (hung with cab)
  • Hood assembly – body color (hung with cab)
  • Door garnish finish strips, door finish strips, door glass channel retainer strips, rear window frame – date dependent:

Through July 1928 – body color (hung with cab)
August 1928 – December – 1928 body color (hung with cab) or dipped, gloss black enamel
Beginning January 1929 – dipped, gloss black enamel

  • Fenders, shields, running boards, radiator shell, hood shelves, and hood clips, head lamp case, mirror bracket – dipped, gloss black enamel

Mirror assembly

*2 – windshield frame (including fasteners) and hinge were hung with the cab and painted body color. The windshield was then assembled with glass and weather-stripping. ?then hinge installed? ?then installed on cab?

???????????For restoration it is recommended that the windshield frame and hinge be installed and fit to the body-in-white (including swing arms). It should then be removed for separate painting with the glass and rubber seal masked off. The windshield hinge should be painted separately so that it can be installed onto the finished body-in-white without the windshield. Note that the pillar finish strips must be installed before the windshield hinge. So, if the windshield hinge is going to be left attached to the body-in-white for painting, then the pillar strips must also be installed (without the nickel finished screws).

Both the outside and inside of the cab was painted in one operation. Fleet owners could get a polished finish for an extra charge.
