AA Floor Mats and Carpets Parts Descriptions

General Information

The following descriptions are sequenced numerically by part number. For a direct link to a body type’s mat or carpet description, use the “Floor Mats and Carpets Table”.

There were twenty-four different mats and carpets used for the AA’s as follows:

  • Thirteen Front Floor Mats – Drawings of each are included within the descriptions below
  • One Front Floor Carpet – For type 275-A Funeral Coach. There are no engineering drawings on the MAFFI parts data base.
  • Eight Rear Cargo Area Mats – not yet researched
  • Three Miscellaneous Mats/Carpets (for rear step and tool box) – not yet researched

A-72230 Front Floor Matt (Rubber)

A-72230 Front Floor Mat

A-72230 Front Floor Mat

For 85-A body type and only used through March 1929 when it was obsoleted. For those 85-A Panel Deliveries with the hand brake lever located in front of the transmission shift tower and had the A chassis 3-speed transmission with a standard coupling shaft (i.e. no factory optional dual high transmission). This mat was also used for the 79-A Panel Delivery through March 1929.

Like the initial AA-82161/A-35230 mats, this was a black rubber mat with a corrugation type surface (commonly called a pyramid design).

A-72230 Floor Mat Detail

A-72230 Floor Mat Detail

Unlike the engineering drawing for front floor mat AA-82161-B/A-35230-B, this mat was not specified to be used as an AA mat with optional cut-out holes for the dual high transmission shift pedal.

It is possible that Ford did not offer the dual high transmission with the 85-A Panel Delivery. The December 1928 Body Parts List supports this theory by not listing a mat for an 85-A with dual high as was done for the 82-A Closed Cab. However, direct supporting documentation has not been found.

The floor mat detail photograph provides measurements of the transmission and brake hand lever openings area, accelerator and foot rest openings, as well as sections AA and BB details.

The 85-A was started in production beginning in August 1928. Since most 1928 AA’s had the hand brake lever at the left cowl, this mat would have gotten little usage until the first of 1929.

The mat outer perimeter and the transmission tower opening had a 7/16″ to 9/16″ plain edge and a 3/16″ wide by 1/16″ high border on the inside of the edging. There were 1/32″ x 1/32″ raised cut guide lines to allow openings to be cut for cargo body control levers. These cut guide lines applied to Ford sold dump, coal, and garbage bodies only.

This mat was cut to a shorter length for mat AA-330230 and used with type 330-A School Bus (see dashed cut line shown in the drawing).

AA-85230 Floor Mat Detail

AA-85230 Floor Mat Detail

Floor mat AA-85230  was a unique design and was initially used for the Murray supplied 85-B Panel Delivery. The 85-B started production in June 1930. The Murray supplied 290-A Standard Police Patrol design was based on the 85-A and used the same floor mat. The  production of this Standard Police Patrol started in early 1931.

The mat design allowed the sides to cover and hide the nailed down top surface of the A-80505 scuff plates used with these body types. These scuff plates were attached with five oval head, slotted wood  screws on the side of the floor side sill.

Note that these scuff plates were also used on the 79-B Panel Delivery and 225-A Drop Floor Panel Delivery. Mat A-79230 was used for these A chassis body types.

AA Door Scuff Plates Table

The “Door Scuff Plates Table” below can be used to determine the original scuff plate part(s) used for a given AA body type. Note that most scuff plates were grouped with door parts and carried the word “door” in the part name. However, scuff plates were attached to the lower door openings and not part of the physical door. Table columns are as follows:

Type – Cab or body type code (Ford assigned)

Name – Cab or body type name (Ford assigned)

Loc. – The location of the scuff plate – front (right and left front door openings – i.e. driver compartment doors), side (right and left side door openings – doors to behind front doors), rear (cargo area rear door openings).

Part – The part for the scuff plate. Each part is linked to a description/gallery.

Material – The type of material for the part (????? to be determined)

For 76-A – This was a steel plate ???????????????????? body color

A-73425/26 – Front Door Scuff Plate (RH/LH)

For 85-A – This was a steel plate ???????????????????? body color
The 85-A Panel Delivery had plain, body color, stamped steel, front door scuff plates.

Figure 5 shows an end view of an 85-A scuff plate. It wrapped the body side sill and was nailed to the under side and attached with five oval head, slotted wood screws to the top side of the side sill. These plates were also used on the 79-A Panel Delivery.

AA-85136 – Sub-Sill Rear Door Scuff Plate

For 85-A – This was a steel plate ???????????????????? body color

A plain, body color, stamped steel rear door scuff plate was used for the 85-A Panel Delivery which wrapped the rear floor board and rear body cross sill.

The 85-A scuff plate was attached with six flat head, slotted wood screws to the top side of the rear floor board. The scuff plate was attached to the under side of the body rear cross sill with flat head slotted screws.

The top flange of the rear door scuff plate included two notches for rear door lower latches. Beginning in May 1929, 85-A rear scuff plate AA-85163 Design 2 was introduced. It included notches for female dovetails (see figure 6). This dovetail designed rear scuff plate continued with the 85-B Panel Delivery.

Note – AA-87135 Rear Door Scuff Plate was for an 85-A used with AA’s having the 1929 bevel gear rear axle and a flat (top side) #4 frame cross member. This would have allowed the floor to be installed on the sills without a sub-sill structure. This 85-A body style was not put into production.

A-80404 – Front Door Scuff Plate

For 85-B, 290-A – This was a steel plate ???????????????????? body color

85-B Panel Delivery had a plain, body color, stamped steel, front door scuff plate.

Two sided, 85-B scuff plates were attached to the body side sills. They were nailed to the top and attached with five oval head, slotted wood screws to the sides of the sills. These scuff plates were also used on the 79-B Panel Delivery.

AA-87135-B – Rear Door Scuff Plate

For 85-B – This was a steel plate ???????????????????? body color

A plain, body color, stamped steel rear door scuff plate was used for the 85-B Panel Delivery which wrapped the rear floor board and rear body cross sill.

The 85-B scuff plate was attached with seven carriage bolts arranged in a zigzag pattern made up of three front row and a four rear row bolts. The carriage bolt heads were inserted through the top flange of the plate and extended through the plate’s lower flange. Bolts were secured with lock washers and square nuts.

The top flange of the rear door scuff plate included two notches for rear door lower latches. It included notches for female dovetails (see figure 6).
